Gold Plated Bronze Baku by John Landrum Bryant
The Baku — The Legendary Nightmare Eater
THE ASIAN CULTURES, MANY CENTURIES AGO, CREATED A VERY USEFUL MYTHICAL CREATURE: THE BAKU.
WITH AN ELEPHANT HEAD, A TIGER BODY AND AN OX’S TAIL, IT IS TO BE PLACED BESIDE ONE’S BED AND REMAINS AWARE ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT TO PROTECT ITS SLEEPING PATRON AGAINST BAD DREAMS BY DEVOURING THEM BEFORE THEY ENTER ONE’S SLEEP. WHAT A CAPITAL IDEA! I HAVE HAD ONE BY MY BED, NO MATTER IN WHAT CITY I SLEEP, FOR MANY YEARS.
YES — IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION — I’VE HAD NIGHTMARES DURING ALL THOSE NIGHTS, BUT ONLY AFTER THE BAKU HAD EATEN AND EATEN MY BAD DREAMS UNTIL IT COULD HOLD NO MORE! BUT WITH THE DAWN OF EACH NEW DAY, THE BAKU IS MAGICALLY EMPTIED OF THE PRIOR NIGHT’S MEALS AND READY TO START AGAIN!
I OFFER YOU A VERY SLENDER, EAGER BAKU IN THREE WONDERFUL FINISHES: BLACK RHODIUM PLATED BRONZE WITH SILVER PLATED TUSKS, SILVER PLATED BRONZE WITH GOLD PLATED TUSKS, AND GOLD PLATED BRONZE WITH SILVER PLATED TUSKS. ALL ARE MADE ENTIRELY BY HAND IN A VERY LIMITED EDITION WHICH WILL NOT BE REPEATED.
This piece was made in Manhattan entirely by hand, and was cast, one at a time, using the lost wax process. Prince John Landrum Bryant Created and Designed this piece and Supervised its Fabrication.
