Pair of Sofas

I knew what I wanted to achieve with these sofas, but realizing it through the design and fabrication stages was so interesting. Even after the hardwood frames were finished, I significantly modified them. Only then could I design the upholstery fabric: deceptively simple, but optical. I had some extra made should the client wish other furniture in the same fabric.

The two square inserts in the back of each sofa, realized in a pattern of broad tail and alligator framed by Japanese silk ribbon, were conceived to arrest the eye, as the textures, colors and materials harmonized within their squares, but did not match the color or pattern of the upholstery fabric.
The legs are half circles, hand cast in graphite-colored acrylic with sterling silver flakes floating inside. The process of floating the flakes is time-consuming to make and is my fabricator’s closely-guarded secret. I use them only on unique pieces.

The Pair of Sofas are numbers XV and XVI on the sterling silver plaques which I use to identify my FURniture series created in cooperation with Dennis Basso fur salons.
